If your hair extensions are falling out, slipping, or shedding weeks before your maintenance appointment, let’s clear something up right away:
That’s not “just how extensions are.”
We hear this a lot in our New York salons. Clients come in frustrated, embarrassed, sometimes even blaming themselves. They assume they did something wrong, or, worse, that extensions are just high-maintenance and unpredictable.
The truth is, extensions rarely just “fall out.”
When I-tip extensions slip or shed excessively, there is almost always a reason. And a lot of the time, it’s something that just wasn’t fully explained to you in the first place.
Let’s talk about what your stylist may not have told you.

The Shampoo Problem No One Talks About
One of the biggest causes of slipping i-tip extensions isn’t the installation. It’s the products you use at home. Things like your shampoo and conditioner.
The Wrong Hair Products Can Destroy Your Bonds
The advice that most women are given is to use sulfate-free products. But here’s the thing… sulfate-free does not automatically mean extension-safe. Many shampoos (even luxury salon brands), contain hidden oils, conditioning agents, or heavy silicones that can break down the integrity of your beads over time.
This is what happens:
I-tip extensions are secured with small, discreet beads. These beads need friction to stay in place. When oil-based products accumulate at the root, they reduce that friction. The bead slowly loosens, and the extension begins to slide.
It doesn’t happen overnight. It happens gradually, until suddenly you’re noticing strands in your brush or on your bathroom floor.
Deep conditioning masks at the scalp, oil-based serums near the roots, and “hydrating” shampoos are among the biggest culprits.
This is why we recommend zero-oil formulas specifically designed for bonded extensions. Clean, lightweight, oil-free products protect the bond and extend the life of your install.
Moisture is important. But where and how you apply it matters.
It’s this exact problem that led our founder, Christina, to start developing her own line of shampoo and conditioner. She needed products that were truly extension-safe, but still smelled incredible and left your hair feeling shiny and soft. When she couldn’t find what she wanted on the market, she designed her own.

The Brushing Mistake 90% of Women Make
Now let’s talk about brushing, because many women don’t realize they’re brushing their hair wrong.
In fact, almost all of our clients think they’re brushing their hair correctly, until we show them otherwise.
The common mistake here is that people brush from the top down.
When you drag a brush from the root through the lengths, especially if there’s tension or tangling, you’re pulling directly on the bead. Over time, that repetitive stress weakens the hold.
The correct method is simple but critical:
- Always brush from the ends upward.
- Support the root with your hand while detangling.
- Use a brush specifically designed for extensions.
- Brush multiple times per day to prevent matting near the bead.
Another mistake we see is clients brushing their hair too aggressively while it’s still soaking wet. When your hair is wet, it stretches. Pulling at it creates unnecessary tension on both your natural strands and your extension bonds.
Brushing isn’t just about preventing tangles. It’s about preserving the structure of your install.
When done correctly, it strengthens longevity. When done incorrectly, it shortens it dramatically.

Cheap Hair vs. Ethically Sourced Slavic or Indian Hair
Here’s one of our favorite topics to talk about, and something that most salons won’t say out loud:
Not all “human hair” is created equal.
We’ve been talking about hair quality and the hair industry on this blog for over a year now, and the topic remains relevant and important today.
You see, cheap hair is often acid-treated, stripped of its natural cuticle and coating in silicone to appear shiny. This means that when you first have it done, it looks beautiful, smooth, glossy, and perfect.
But then that coating washes off.
And underneath, the hair is compromised, tangles more easily, sheds excessively, and dries out too quickly. The strands create friction against each other and at the bead, leading to matting and excessive unnecessary tension.
This leaves clients feeling like the installation failed, when in reality, the hair quality failed.
High-quality, ethically sourced Slavic or Indian hair is a world apart. The cuticle remains intact and aligned. The strands move naturally, and they don’t fight against each other. And most importantly, this hair keeps its integrity over multiple installs.
At the end of the day, better hair doesn’t just look more expensive. It behaves better.
It sheds less, it tangles less, and it puts less stress on your natural hair and the bead itself.
So, if your extensions are constantly falling out, the issue might not be your routine. It’s what was installed in the first place.
Luxury results start with luxury hair.

Your Workout Routine Is Affecting Your Extensions
Here’s something that might shock you…your gym routine may be breaking down your bonds.
Excessive sweating causes a buildup of salt and oil on your roots. As the sweat dries, it crystallizes around the beads of your extensions. And that buildup weakens the grip and reduces friction.
If you’re doing intense cardio, hot yoga, or heavy weight training several times a week and not washing your hair afterward, that residue can build up on your bonds.
Over time, this contributes to slippage.
Plus, that tight gym ponytail can create repeated tension in the same area, which can further loosen your beads.
Here’s the rule we give our clients:
If you sweat heavily, you need to wash your hair afterward.
This goes against the popular advice of “washing less.” But I-tip extensions are not meant to sit in oil and salt buildup for days at a time.
Clean bonds are strong bonds.

How Often You Wash Your Hair Actually Matters
So if clean bonds are strong bonds, let’s talk about how often you need to wash your hair.
There’s a common misconception in the extension world that washing less will always make your extensions last longer.
With i-tip extensions, that’s not entirely true.
When oil accumulates at your root, it creates slip. When dry shampoo builds up repeatedly, it creates weight and friction at the bead. Both of these things can compromise longevity.
I-tip extensions are designed to be kept clean and oil-free at the root.
For most clients, washing 2–4 times per week is ideal. If you work out frequently or have an oilier scalp, that number may be higher.
The key isn’t just washing your hair less. It’s washing your hair correctly with oil-free, lightweight products designed to protect your hair extensions.
When your scalp is clean and balanced, your extensions hold better. They feel lighter. They last longer.
Luxury extensions require clean roots. Period.

The Truth: Extensions Don’t Just “Fall Out”
When someone comes to us and says, “My extensions just keep falling out,” we usually look at these five things immediately:
- Product buildup
- Oil exposure
- Sweat accumulation
- Brushing habits
- Hair quality
In other words, all of the things that we’ve gone over so far in this guide. We do this because random failure is rare. Especially when you have full-cuticle, luxury hair.
Slippage is almost always preventable.
When extensions are installed properly, matched correctly, and maintained with intention, they should last until your scheduled maintenance appointment without constant loss.
The problem isn’t your extensions.
That’s why our clients always leave with a full care guide, and if they have bundles falling out, we immediately address the issue at their next maintenance appointment.

What To Do If Your Extensions Are Already Falling Out
If you’re noticing excessive shedding or slipping with your extensions, don’t panic, but don’t ignore it either. Here’s what we recommend:
- First: Stop using oil-based products at the root immediately.
- Second: Wash with a clarifying, extension-safe shampoo to remove buildup.
- Third: Book a bond check with a professional. Do not attempt to tighten beads yourself.
DIY adjustments often cause more damage than the original issue.
If matting has started near the root, it needs to be corrected early. Waiting only makes it worse.
The sooner you address the issue, the more likely it is that your natural hair stays protected.

Luxury Extensions Require Luxury Maintenance
Hair extensions aren’t high maintenance. They’re high standard.
When installed and cared for properly, i-tip extensions should always feel secure, blend seamlessly, and last until your next maintenance appointment without falling out.
They should enhance your natural hair, not stress it.
If your extensions are slipping, it’s not something to ignore. And it’s not something you should simply accept as normal.
With the right hair, the right installation, and the right at-home care, extensions don’t fall out.
They stay exactly where they’re meant to.
And that’s the difference between average results and luxury results.
If you’re unsure whether your current routine is protecting or compromising your extensions, schedule a consultation. We’ll assess your installation, your products, and your maintenance habits — and make sure your investment lasts the way it should.
Because when extensions are done correctly, they don’t just look beautiful, they stay beautiful.Want hair extensions that work with your lifestyle?
