How to Hydrate Hair Extensions in the Winter

In this post, we’re helping you learn how to hydrate your hair extensions in the winter. 

Haircare, much like skincare, varies from season to season. And this is even more true when you have extensions. Even the best, highest quality extensions need extra love and care in the winter. This is because hair extensions aren’t receiving nutrients and oils from your scalp, so they run the risk of becoming dry and brittle in the harsh winter months. 

How can you hydrate and take extra care of your hair extensions in the winter, so they last longer? Our founder Christina (@hairgoddessofNY) has shared her top tips and favorite products for keeping your hair (and extensions) hydrated all winter long.

How to Hydrate Hair Extensions in the Winter

1. Switch to a moisturizing, sulphate-free shampoo and conditioner duo

Strong, healthy hair always starts in the shower. It’s important to make sure you’re choosing a lightweight, hydrating and sulphite-free shampoo and conditioner. Christina recommends Milbon Moisture Replenishing shampoo and the matching Milbon conditioner. This duo will gently cleanse your hair, repair bonds and deeply hydrate – without weighing your hair down. 

2. Use a hair repair booster

Dry, cold winter weather leads to more breakage to your hair and your hair extensions. That’s why Christina always recommends these power drops to help heal damaged hair. You simply need to mix 3-5 drops into your conditioner to get the extra healing and hydrating boost that your hair desperately needs in the winter. This reparative serum will reverse damage after your first use. 

3. Avoid hot water

Yup, I know! Someone telling you to avoid hot water in the winter must be crazy… but this is one of the best tips we can offer for hydrating and protecting your hair extensions in the winter. Hot water can dry out your hair extensions, so we always recommend washing your hair in lukewarm water. This will help prevent frizz and dryness.

4. Limit heat styling and use a heat protectant

Excessive heat can dehydrate your hair extensions on the best of days… but in the winter that dehydration can be even more pronounced. To really protect the moisture in your hair, air dry whenever possible. And when you do need to style with heat, make sure to apply a bond-safe heat protectant. Christina always recommends this heat protectant to her clients.

5. Invest in a humidifier

The mixture of winter air and indoor heating can suck the moisture out of your hair. Using a humidifier helps keep your extensions from drying out – which is why we always recommend them to our clients. Keeping the air in your home humid will help your hair retain its natural moisture. This humidifier is a great option for protecting your hair extensions in the winter.

How to Achieve the Perfect Bouncy Blowout at Home

One of the biggest hair trends that we are seeing right now is the perfect, 90’s blowout. It’s one of our favorite looks and we’re always getting requests for blowouts at the salon. The beauty of a blowout is that your hair doesn’t need to be perfectly straight, wavy or curly. This hairstyle looks good on everyone.

And there’s no denying the confidence and joy you feel when you walk out of the salon with the perfect blowout. However if you’re craving the glamour of a blowout between salon visits, we’ve put together the ultimate guide to help you fake a salon-quality blowout at home.

What is a Blowout?

Simply put, a blowout is a way of styling your hair with a blowdryer and round brush. It’s a way to achieve bounce and volume where you can add waves, curl or straighten without the use of a curling wand or flat iron. 

No matter how you choose to style, a blowout is guaranteed to add confidence and style to your day. The best part is that it’s easy to do your own blowout at home.

How to Achieve the Perfect Home Blowout

Prep Your Hair

A perfect hair day starts with the right base. You always need to make sure that you’re using the right shampoo and conditioner for your hair type. Our founder, Christina recommends you use this Nutritive hydrating shampoo and conditioner from Kérastase.

Choosing a shampoo and conditioner set that have been designed to work together will really help with the strength and shine of your hair. 

Kérastase has designed this shampoo and conditioner to deeply hydrate parched hair – helping you have an even, silky smooth home blowout. Once out of the shower, make sure to use Genesis Heat Protectant Spray as a base for styling. This is a very important step whenever you’re using heat to style your hair. 

When you have extensions, it’s important to avoid using hair oils as they can cause your extensions to slip. That’s why we always recommend a good moisturizing treatment when you come in for your 6-8 weeks appointment.

Let Your Hair Air Dry First

A big mistake women often make is overdrying their hair. We often blow dry our hair straight, to then add curl – and this ends up causing more damage. A blowout can help you style your hair from the blowdrying stage, to avoid extra damage later on. But you still don’t want to over dry your hair. 

That’s why when you’re doing a home blowout, we recommend letting your hair air dry first. You want your hair to be about 85% dry.

If you don’t have time to let your hair air dry – you can ‘rough’ blow dry your hair. For this, hold your hair dryer about 6-8 inches from your hair and use your fingers to tousle your hair as you dry. Stop when your hair is 85% dry.

Blow Out Your Hair

Now it’s time to style. We recommend dividing your hair horizontally into two or three sections. Use a large clip to keep the top half of your hair out of the way, while you blow out the bottom section. Once the bottom half is done, work on the next section, and then the last section. 

You’ll need a good round brush, or a blowdryer like this one that is a brush and blowdryer in one. The bigger the brush, the softer the curls (and vice versa). If you want a ‘straight’ blowout, use a paddle brush. Our best advice is to work slowly and make sure you’re using a blowdryer with the correct attachments – this way you can fine tune your hair without overheating. 

You’ll get into the hang of curling and drying as you go. And keep in mind that practice makes perfect! Your first home blowout might not be salon-quality, but keep working on it. 

Add Your Finishing Touches

Once your hair is completely dry, you can add your finishing touches. You don’t want to add any oil to your hair now – or it will weigh down your volume and could make it look like you need to wash your hair, which defeats the purpose of your hard work. 

Christina recommends you finish with this dry texturizing spray. And to refresh your blowout on day two, make sure to use this dry shampoo powder.

Meet the Olivia Christensen Team

Welcome back! When we first started the blog, we did an introduction post for our founder, Christina. Our intention for the blog was to introduce ourselves, share news, bring you the latest hair trends, and share our favorite products! And we realized it was time to introduce you to the rest of the team.

We’ll start with a quick blurb about our founder, Christina (if you’d like to read her full story, you can find that here). Then we’ll introduce you to the rest of the team.

Christina Oliva (Founder)

Our founder, Christina Oliva is an award-winning hair extension specialist. There’s a reason she’s known as the Hair Goddess of NY, but her career wasn’t always so glamorous.  

Christina started her hair styling career over 18 years ago in her parents garage on Staten Island. She quickly gained devoted clientele and became a master of her industry thanks to her precision, compassion and intricate beaded extension technique. 

Since those early days, Christina has expanded her business to two intimate spaces in New York (NYC and Staten Island). She works with experts and world-class stylists to bring a sense of luxury to your local neighborhood salon. 

Today, Christina is one of the most sought after hair extension specialists in the world. Whether her clients are suffering from hair loss or want to regain their confidence, she tailors each experience to their unique needs.

Victoria (Hair Extension Specialist)

First things first, let’s introduce you to Victoria! 

Victoria is Christina’s sister, and they’ve been working alongside each other in the hair business for 13 years. She told us that Christina has helped pave the way for her, teaching her so much about hair extensions over that time.

Her journey started in Toronto, Canada before leading her to Manhattan, New York where she has been a part of our team since 2016. Over the years Sandra has collaborated with Christina to deliver exceptional results. She tailors every service to fit each client’s unique hair type – whether fine or thick.
