Busting 5 Common Hair Extension Myths

Hair Extension Myth #1: Hair Extensions Ruin Your Natural Hair
This is a common hair extension myth for a reason. Some hair extension techniques can damage your hair, especially if you have fine or thin hair, and several years ago, these were the only methods people used. So the myth grew, leading women everywhere to think hair extensions aren’t for them because they’re too damaging.
However, hair extensions should not damage your natural hair. Instead, they should promote natural hair growth while protecting your hair from heat, styling, and other factors. Women who wear our extensions routinely see their natural hair grow the longer they’re with us.
All too often, we see women come into our salon with heavy, misplaced hair extensions that pull and damage their natural hair. Seeing this damage repeatedly led our founder, Christina, to develop her unique application technique.
At our two New York salons, we use i-tip hair extensions, and our expert stylists custom-blend the hair into small, lightweight bundles that match your natural hair. More importantly, we place these small bundles strategically to ensure no damage to your natural strands.
Simply put, hair extensions shouldn’t pull or damage your hair. When applied correctly, they should promote natural hair growth by protecting your natural hair. That’s one reason this method has become so popular worldwide.

Hair Extensions Myth #2: Hair Extensions Are Only for Adding Length
Again, this is another big myth about hair extensions (as is everything we’re sharing in this post). Hair extensions aren’t just for adding length. Some of our favorite clients and celebrities, for that matter, prove that hair extensions can add volume and body to your hair, alongside or even without adding length.
Hair extensions can turn the simplest hairstyles into showstopping looks–and quite honestly, most of our clients come to us because they want volume, density, and styles that hold longer than their fine, natural hair holds on its own.
A full, voluminous blowout looks even better with hair extensions, because you have more hair to work with. Not only that, but extensions protect your natural hair, keeping it safe from extensive heat damage, and your blowout will last longer with extensions in.
Some of our clients even come in for support and hair growth after undergoing cancer treatments. Like our gorgeous client Ingrid:
“Christina and her incredible team brought my bridal hair dreams to life! While planning my wedding, I received the heartbreaking news that I had been diagnosed with cancer. This unexpected twist led me down a long and challenging road, forcing me to put my life on hold.
After my recovery and as my hair slowly began to grow back, I couldn’t wait to meet with Christina. My hair had always been a significant part of my identity, and losing it – especially so close to my wedding – felt like a massive blow to my confidence. From our very first meeting, Christina made me feel incredibly comfortable and reassured me throughout the entire process. I was blown away by my transformation. When I looked at myself in the mirror I saw me and not the girl who was recovering from cancer.
I’m so grateful for Christina and her skillful craft – she not only helped me look my best on my wedding day, but also helped me feel like my most authentic and confident self.“

Hair Extensions Myth #3: Extensions Can’t Look Natural
Hair extensions should always look natural. That’s that. If they don’t, they’re the wrong hair type or the wrong extension type for you.
The secret to natural-looking extensions is all about the method, especially for clients with thinner or fine hair. A bulky weft or misplaced tape-ins will look wrong, not only because of the chunk of color, but also because the density won’t match your natural hair.
Density is a big part of what makes extensions look unnatural, but color is the other factor. Most hair isn’t one shade; it’s dimensional with 2-3 colors, even in a simple brown. That’s another incredible thing about Christina’s application technique. She custom-blends several colors into every bundle to ensure no one (not even you) can tell where your natural hair ends and the extensions begin.
If your stylist can’t custom-match your extensions to your color, density, and texture, then chances are you need to go somewhere else or shop around for different hair.
This is why the consultation appointment is so important.
Our client Debbie had this to say about how natural our hair extensions look:
“I recently visited Olivia Christensen Salon for hair extensions, and I couldn’t be happier with the results! I have been using their hair extensions for almost ten years. From the moment I walked in, the staff made me feel welcome and comfortable.
The consultation process was thorough—Christina took the time to understand my hair goals, color-matched my extensions perfectly, and explained all my options. The installation itself was seamless, with great attention to detail, ensuring the extensions blended naturally with my hair.
What impressed me most was the quality of the extensions—they feel soft, look completely natural, and have held up beautifully.”

Hair Extensions Myth #4: Extensions Limit Your Styling Options
We already touched briefly on how hair extensions help hold your styles longer, but a common myth is that they also limit your styling options. In reality, hair extensions should do the opposite.
When you invest in full-cuticle, real-human hair extensions, they should style like your natural hair. You can work out, throw it up in a ponytail, slick it back, braid it, and more. Hair extensions should enhance your hairstyles by giving you more hair to work with and helping your styles last longer.
Instead of limiting your styling options, they should open up a world of creative styling options for you.
And while bulky wefts might make it harder to wear your hair up or do certain styles, our method focuses on placing hair where it’s most invisible, helping you style your hair with ease.

Hair Extensions Myth #5: Extensions Are Only a Short-Term Solution
Hair extensions shouldn’t be a quick fix. Our clients come to us for years, and during that time their natural hair grows long, healthy, and full. No matter how long their natural hair gets, however, they still love their extensions. When you invest in high-quality hair extensions, they should last 12+ months, so you can easily incorporate them into your regular styling routine.
Hair extensions can definitely be a long-term solution for your hair goals. Just ask Sabrina, who’s been our client for over 8 years.
“I’ve been a client at Olivia Christensen Salon for over 8 years. Christina has a natural ability to make you feel comfortable no matter how badly you’re feeling, especially about your hair. I went to her with broken, thinning hair, and she knew exactly what I needed. She took the time to explain what she thought would be best and followed through on it.
The hair quality is both beautiful and natural. Christina and her staff make going to her salon a pleasant experience. It’s a place where you always come out feeling better than when you went in.”
In reality, hair extensions are versatile, natural-looking, and an amazing way to completely change up your look this year. Hair extensions are here to stay, and if you’ve been on the fence about whether they’ll work for you, book a consultation with our founder, Christina, today.
