Hair Extension Tips

Are Hair Extensions Ruining Your Natural Hair?

“Be honest… will hair extensions ruin my real hair?”

This is one of the most common questions that we get during our extension consultations. And we get it, this fear is understandable.

There’s a good chance that you’ve seen some horror stories about hair extensions online. Things like breakage, thinning, and bald spots are just some of the problems that poorly installed hair extensions can cause.

But here’s the truth:

When installed properly, hair extensions don’t ruin your natural hair.

It’s improper installation, poor maintenance, low-quality hair, and rushed salon experiences that cause your hair extensions to damage your natural hair.

When done correctly, hair extensions can actually protect your natural hair and help it grow longer and stronger over time.

Let’s talk about it.

The Protective Shield Concept: How Extensions Can Actually Help Your Hair Grow

This is the thing that most people never hear.

When installed correctly, i-tip hair extensions act as a protective shield for your natural hair. Here’s what we mean by that.

With our i-tips, your extensions take the brunt of daily styling. Things like heat tools, environmental stress, friction, and even brushing tension.

Instead of constantly curling or straightening your real hair, you’re styling the extension hair. That reduces the risk of repetitive heat damage to your natural strands. Plus, with our full-cuticle, real-human hair extensions, they hold your style so you don’t have to recurl your hair every day.

Extensions also add weight and structure, which can reduce over-manipulation. Clients tend to “mess with” their natural hair less when it already looks full and styled.

And because the extensions create a fuller baseline shape, many clients don’t feel the need to over-process their own hair with excessive lightening or chemical treatments.

We see this often with influencers and long-term clients. Their before photos show finer, shorter hair. After consistent, properly maintained extensions, their natural hair underneath appears thicker, healthier, and longer.

Not because the extensions magically grew it.

But because it was protected. And when your hair is shielded from constant daily stress, it thrives.

When Extensions Actually Do Cause Damage

We won’t lie to you, though. Hair extensions can cause damage to your natural hair. We see it all the time when new clients come to us with bald spots and damage. But this doesn’t happen randomly.

It happens when:

  • Extensions are installed too tightly
  • Beads are placed incorrectly
  • The wrong amount of hair is used per section
  • Maintenance appointments are delayed
  • The wrong kind of extension method is used for someone with thin or easily damaged hair
  • The stylist moves the beads up instead of properly removing and reinstalling them

That last one is more common than people realize.

Some stylists “slide” the bead up during maintenance instead of fully removing it and reinstalling it properly. Over time, this creates tension at the root and stress on the natural strand.

Proper i-tip maintenance requires precision. The bead should be removed, the natural hair assessed, and the extension reinstalled cleanly, not dragged upward.

With i-tip extensions, much of the damage comes from a stylist taking shortcuts or not knowing how to properly work with them.

I-Tip Extensions vs Every Other Method

We’ve talked a lot about the different hair extension methods in the past. And here’s the thing, not all extension methods affect the hair the same way. Let’s break it down honestly.

I-Tip Extensions

Pros:

  • No heat or glue
  • Reusable hair
  • Flexible, natural movement
  • Individual placement allows customization
  • No bulky wefts

Cons:

  • Requires proper maintenance every 6–8 weeks
  • Must be kept clean and oil-free at the root
  • Installation takes time and skill

When installed correctly, i-tips distribute weight evenly and allow the natural hair to move freely. They’re one of the safest long-term methods available, but only in experienced hands.

Tape-In Extensions

Pros:

  • Faster installation
  • Lays flat against the head
  • Good for finer hair

Cons:

  • Adhesive can weaken natural hair over time (and cause bald spots)
  • Requires solvent for removal
  • Cannot be reused as many times
  • Tension spreads across a wider section
  • You have to ‘hide’ the tape when styling your hair (especially up)

Tape-ins can be good when done correctly, but repeated adhesive exposure and improper removal are common sources of breakage.

Keratin Bond (K-Tip) Extensions

Pros:

  • Long-lasting
  • Strong hold
  • Very discreet when applied well

Cons:

  • Requires heat during installation
  • The removal process can be hard on your natural hair
  • Not reusable
  • High risk if improperly applied

Heat-based bonds introduce another variable into hair health. While they can look seamless, they require significant expertise to avoid stress at your roots.

Sew-In or Weft Extensions

Pros:

  • Quick volume
  • Good for thick hair types

Cons:

  • Really heavy-weight distribution (we’ve had some clients say they feel like wearing a wig)
  • Can create tension along the braid track
  • Less flexible placement
  • Harder to style (once again, you have to think about how to ‘hide’ the track, especially when pulling your hair up)

Wefts can work, but the tension created by stitching hair onto your head can be problematic if not installed and maintained correctly.

Why “Factory” Salons Cause Damage

This is the conversation that most salons want to avoid… Factory salons prioritize speed and volume. Multiple clients are scheduled back-to-back, so that stylists are pressured to move quickly. This is where precision suffers.

Extensions are not meant to be rushed. Each bundle should be customized, each bead should be sized correctly, and every placement should consider your hair density and lifestyle.

In high-turnover salons, you often see:

  • Overloaded sections
  • Beads placed too close to the scalp
  • Insufficient blending
  • Inconsistent maintenance

It’s important that hair extensions are treated like a bespoke service, not an assembly line; your natural hair is going to pay the price.

And this doesn’t mean that luxury hair extension appointments need to last all day. When our clients are in a hurry, we work together to get them in and out as quickly as possible. But at our salon, the health of your hair matters more than the number of installs we can do in a day.

Even Experienced Stylists Make Maintenance Mistakes

Here’s another truth: even stylists who offer i-tip extensions can cause damage if maintenance isn’t done correctly.

Moving beads upward instead of removing and reinstalling them properly is one of the biggest issues we see during corrective appointments.

When a bead is simply slid up the strand, it drags accumulated oil, buildup, and stress upward with it. This creates tension at a new growth point that wasn’t designed to support weight yet.

Over time, that tension weakens the strand.

Correct maintenance requires:

  • Removing the bead entirely
  • Cleansing the section
  • Assessing the natural hair
  • Reinstalling the extension properly

There are no shortcuts in healthy extension work.

The Real Question: Are Extensions Ruining Your Hair?

So let’s answer the question that you came here for. If your natural hair is thinning, breaking, or not growing, ask yourself:

  • Have my hair extensions been installed with precision?
  • Is the hair high-quality and ethically sourced?
  • Are you maintaining them on schedule?
  • Is your stylist customizing your placement?
  • Are shortcuts being taken during maintenance?

When done correctly, i-tip hair extensions should not cause bald spots, excessive shedding, or chronic breakage.

They should feel comfortable and move naturally.

And when removed properly, your natural hair should feel just as healthy — if not healthier — than before.

What Healthy Extensions Should Feel Like

Healthy, properly installed i-tip extensions should:

  • Feel lightweight
  • Allow natural movement
  • Grow out evenly
  • Not cause soreness after installation
  • Blend seamlessly

You should never feel tension when you pull your hair into a ponytail. You should see excessive shedding every time you brush your hair, and you shouldn’t feel anxiety before maintenance appointments.

When extensions are done at a luxury level, they blend with your natural hair rather than fighting against it.

The Bottom Line

Hair extensions don’t ruin natural hair.

  • Poor technique does.
  • Cheap hair does.
  • Rushed installations do.
  • Improper maintenance does.

When you invest in high-quality hair, precise installation, and intentional upkeep, extensions can actually protect your natural hair and support long-term growth.

They’re not the enemy.

They’re a tool.

And like any tool, the result depends entirely on who’s using it.

If you’re unsure whether your current extensions are protecting or compromising your natural hair, schedule a consultation. We’ll assess your installation, maintenance routine, and long-term goals, and create a plan that prioritizes the health of your real hair above all else.

Because luxury extensions shouldn’t cost you your natural hair.

They should enhance it.

Hair Extension Care

Bye, Bye Dry Hair: Your Fall Hair Care Guide

It’s officially fall here in New York, which means it’s time to switch up your hair care routine. Summer can be tough on your hair — between the sun, chlorine, salt, and sweat, you’re likely heading into fall with drier, more brittle strands. Combine that with the season’s cooler temperatures and lower humidity, and your hair is likely to need a little extra TLC.

This fall hair care guide will walk you through how to keep your hair hydrated and healthy all season long, especially if you wear extensions.

So, how does caring for your extensions differ from caring for your natural hair in the fall? Many seasonal hair guides recommend rich oils and hydrating masks to restore moisture, but those products can cause your extension bonds to slip. That’s why we don’t suggest them.

But don’t worry! We’ve got you covered. This guide is packed with stylist-approved tips to help you care for both your hair and your extensions this fall. Ready? Let’s jump in.

1. Trim Your Hair

Fall is the perfect time for a trim. After a summer of sun, salt, and chlorine, your hair is probably feeling a little dry and brittle. A quick refresh to remove those split or damaged ends will instantly make your hair look and feel healthier. Plus, if you’re worried about losing length, our signature i-tip extensions can restore it seamlessly, leaving you with fuller, healthier-looking hair for the new season.

2. Get Hair Extensions (Yes, Really!)

There’s a common myth (blog post busting myths about hair extensions) that hair extensions damage your natural hair, and while that can happen with the wrong method, our signature i-tip technique does the opposite. It’s lightweight, chemical-free, and designed to protect your natural hair while promoting healthy growth. All of our clients actually notice stronger, longer hair after wearing their extensions.

To find out more about how our signature i-tip method can help protect your hair this fall, book a consultation with our founder, Christina, today.

3. Use a Clarifying Shampoo

Give your hair a fresh start this fall with a clarifying shampoo. After a summer full of sun, salt, and product buildup, your scalp and hair need a deep cleanse. Our Cleanse Clarifying Shampoo is professional-grade and formulated with an anti-residue blend that deeply purifies your hair without stripping it. It removes buildup and impurities while creating the perfect foundation for long-lasting hair extension adhesion.

4. Take Care of Your Scalp

A scalp treatment in the colder months isn’t just a luxury — it’s a must for stronger, healthier, and shinier hair all fall and winter long. The skin on your scalp is delicate and ages up to six times faster than the skin on your face, which means it needs extra care. Ask your stylist about a professional scalp treatment at your next appointment to slow scalp aging and give both your hair and scalp the boost they need to thrive through the colder, drier months.

5. Ask for a Hydrating Treatment (at the salon)

If you’re concerned about keeping your hair (and extensions) properly moisturized, a hydrating treatment at your next salon visit is a must. While we don’t recommend using hair masks at home (they can cause your bonds to slip), your stylist can safely apply them during your extension maintenance appointment. Since these appointments occur every 6–8 weeks, they provide the perfect opportunity to give your hair some extra TLC and keep it looking healthy and vibrant throughout the season.

6. Use the Right Hair Brush

Not all hair brushes are created equally — and some can cause more damage than others. We’ve specifically designed two hair brushes that every woman with hair extensions should be using. Our Untangle Me Brush is a classic brush featuring gentle metal bristles, making detangling your hair a much simpler task. It can also be used in the shower for detangling wet hair, shampooing while massaging the scalp, and distributing conditioner.

Our Loop Brush is a must-have for your fall haircare routine, especially if you have hair extensions. This brush is carefully designed with plastic loop bristles to prevent the snagging that ordinary brushes cause.

7. Use Protective Hairstyles

One of the simplest ways to protect your hair this fall is by opting for protective hairstyles. Limiting heat styling is always key, as heat can cause serious damage over time. Protective styles don’t just shield your strands from heat, they also tuck away your ends, guarding them against cold, wind, and dry seasonal weather.

Get That Gloss: 5 Haircare Essentials for Effortless Shine

1. The Restorative Cleaner – Start Fresh Every Wash

First things first, a good haircare routine always starts with your shampoo. Not all shampoos are created equal and when it comes to adding gloss and shine to your parched hair – picking the right shampoo makes a big difference. You want a shampoo that does more than just wash away oil. Your shampoo should start at the root and core of your hair to gently cleanse and restore.

Why It Works: The right shampoo does more than just wash your hair. It rejuvenates and strengthens your hair while also locking in moisture for added shine.

Our Pick: Gold Lust Repair and Restore Shampoo

2. The Moisturizing Conditioner – Your Shampoos Right Hand

Don’t overlook this step. It’s important to pick a conditioner that works with your shampoo to repair and restore your hair. You need to pick a conditioner that helps reduce split ends, smooths your cuticles and moisturizes without weighing down your hair. Look for lightweight and ultra-hydrating. We always recommend picking a shampoo and conditioner duo that have been designed to work together.

Why It Works: A good conditioner should repair your split ends, smooth your cuticles and be ultra-hydrating without weighing down your hair. You want a conditioner that repairs and protects your hair.

Our Pick: Gold Lust Repair and Restore Conditioner

3. The ‘In Case of Emergencies’ Hair Mask

Sometimes the damage of winter is too great – and you need to call in the right mask to help truly restore and hydrate your hair. When this happens, look for a hair mask that works hard to repair your hair, while also locking in moisture. Masks with honey and hydrating hyaluronic acid should always be your first pick. Opt for a mask that’s lightweight – similar to your conditioner, you don’t want to weigh your hair down or cause it to look oily.

Why It Works: Hair masks are an easy way to restore shine and repair damage from home. They can repair and restore your hair, protect against heat and lock in moisture for glossy, glass hair.

Our Pick: Gisou Honey Gloss Hydrating Hair Mask or Gold Lust Transformative Hair Mask

4. The Secret Weapon Serum

To achieve truly effortless shine this spring, try adding a repairing hair oil to your routine. Sometimes you just need to tame flyaways and reign in your split ends – and a hair oil can do just that. It’s important to pick a product that’s going to do more than just weigh down your flyways. Your hair oil should repair bonds, protect against heat and enhance hair shine.

Why It Works: A good hair oil can help smooth the cuticle layer and reflect the light more evenly, creating an immediate and visible shine. They should also help seal in moisture that will prevent dryness in the future.

Our Pick: Kérastase Première Repairing High Shine Oil or Gold Lust Nourishing Hair Oil

5. Spray Your Way to Glassy Hair

The last step in your shiny haircare routine is to fight frizz and flyaways. You want to find a product that will fight humidity and leave your hair feeling smoother and shinier. As always, it’s better if it also helps protect your hair against heat.

Why It Works: Picking an anti-frizz product that helps fight humidity is one of the fastest ways to achieve glassy hair this spring. Humidity is going to quickly cause your hair to look frizzy – so fighting this is key.

Our Pick: Color Wow Anti-Frizz Treatment

Glassy hair doesn’t have to be complicated! Even in the winter it’s possible to achieve effortless shine, you just need the right products. It’s also important to attend regular hair appointments. One of the best ways to get that gloss is at the salon. Regular trims and treatments will help protect your hair all year long.

Chatting With Our Clients: Hair Extension Tips

What’s it *really* like having hair extensions?

We’re the experts, and we love hair extensions. We can answer your questions about the logistics of hair extensions, and we can share the pros and cons of various techniques, but it’s our clients who can share what it’s really like to have our hair extensions.

So today we’re starting a new series where we ask our girls about their experiences, styling techniques, and favorite products.

Meet Laura Galebe! Laura started coming to us for hair extensions a couple of months ago. She was looking for length and volume and she wanted hair extensions that looked natural and wouldn’t feel heavy throughout the day. Two Polaroid Images of our hair extension client Laura Galebe.

How do you like our hair extension technique?

I really love the I-tip extensions because they can be individually placed strategically around your head, allowing for more personalized styling. Whether you want more volume or length in specific areas, this method makes it possible to target those spots, giving a natural and customized look that blends seamlessly with your own hair.

Laura’s had other hair extensions in the past, so we wanted to see how our technique compared to what she’s used to.

Two Polaroid Images of our hair extension client Laura Galebe.

How is it different from the tape-ins you’ve previously worn?

Unlike tape-ins, which can limit how you wear your hair, I-tips offer much more flexibility. With I-tip extensions, it’s easier to put your hair up without worrying about the tapes showing. They are super lightweight and evenly distributed, reducing tension on the scalp and giving a more comfortable, long-lasting wear.”

What do you love the most about our technique & brand of hair extensions?

What I appreciate most about your technique is how safe it is for my natural thin hair. The installation doesn’t require glue or heat, which keeps my hair healthier in the long run. Plus, your brand of extensions being 100% human hair is a huge benefit because it ensures the most natural appearance and feel. The extensions also match my natural hair color perfectly, making the overall look more cohesive and effortless.

Lastly, we wanted to know about her styling tips!

Name one hot tool & product you can’t live without.

Mini straightener from Baby Liss & product I would have to say Kristin Ess Dry Shampoo.

If you want to see more photos of how Laura styles her hair extensions, make sure to follow her on Instagram or TikTok! She’s your Glow Up BFF sharing the best of life in New York City.

What is your favorite hot tool & product, if you can pick one?

My all-time favorite hair tool is the Bio Ionic 1.25 ceramic curling iron. It creates the perfect beach wave for your hair because it has a longer barrel than what a regular curling iron has.

One of my favorite products to use is any type of texture spray to give those curls some volume & shape. The one I use and love the most is the Amika un.done volume and texture spray!”

What’s your number one styling tip for extensions?

My best styling tip would be to always use heat protection when doing your hair and to always alternate your curls until you get to the top and last section when curling.

If you want to see how Jordyn styles her extensions on a day-to-day basis, make sure to follow her on Instagram and TikTok. We love her glamour nights in New York and travel inspiration.

Lastly, meet our beautiful client Carson Light. We asked Carson to share with us how extensions have changed her life! We also wanted to know how she styles them and what products she can’t live without.

How have our hair extensions changed your life?

They make me feel so much more confident. I love that every day I can just wake up and feel beautiful and feminine! They completely elevate my confidence every single day. I’m obsessed with them.

Do you find them easy to style and manage?

Yes! I don’t even feel them. I feel like styling is so much easier because your hair just looks good no matter what! They also look good air-dried.”

What do you love most about wearing our hair extensions?

I have so much fun styling them in different ways! I just LOVE having them & they are basically invisible.

If you can name one hot tool & product you can’t live without, what would they be?

Oooooh. My hot tool is definitely my clamp curling iron from Hot Tools, which is 10 years old 😂. The product would be Fekkai full-blown volume texture spray!

Upgrade Your Fall Hair Care Routine With These Tips

Autumn is here and it’s bringing with it cooler weather, falling leaves, and pumpkin spice. We love fall in the city, and along with everything we love about this new season, it also brings new challenges for your hair. Fall and winter can cause problems for our hair, such as dry scalp, split ends, and even duller-looking hair!

Today we’re going to take a fresh look into your shower and bathroom, to make sure that the products and routine you’re following are aligned with what your body and hair need this season. Together we’ll build the perfect fall hair care routine

Upgrade Your Fall Hair Care Routine With These Tips

1. Book a Trim

Kick off the fall season with a trim! We often hear that people feel the same way about booking a trim as they do about going to the dentist, but with Olivia Christensen extensions, you don’t have to worry about losing any length this fall.

Summer sun exposure, chlorine, and saltwater can rough up our hair cuticles. Getting an end-of-season trim can help leave your hair healthier and ready to tackle cooler weather.

2. Treat Your Hair to a Deep Conditioning

Fall tends to be a lot dryer than summer, so one of the best ways you can rehydrate your hair for the season is with a deep conditioning treatment.

When deep conditioning your hair with i-tip extensions, you need to take extra care, otherwise, the extensions can slip. We recommend:

  • Avoiding the bond/attachment points: when applying the deep conditioner, focus on the mid-lengths and ends of your hair. You should never apply the product directly to the i-tip bonds (where the extensions are attached) because oils and heavy conditioners can weaken the adhesive or cause slippage.
  • Use a Sulfate-Free and extension-safe conditioner: make sure to choose products that are safe for your extensions. When in doubt – always ask your stylist what products they recommend.
  • Detangle carefully: after applying the treatment, gently detangle your hair using a wide-tooth comb. Be mindful of your i-tip bonds and avoid pulling or tugging.
  • Rinse well: make sure to rinse out all of the product to prevent any residue that could cause buildup or tangling.
  • Dry carefully: pay your hair dry gently with a towel and avoid excessive rubbing. When blow drying, use low heat.

However, you can always book a deep conditioning treatment on the day of your regularly scheduled maintenance appointment. This would be a great time to get a conditioning treatment and trim for the fall season.

3. Use Protective Hairstyles

Chunky braids, buns, and hair accessories can actually help protect your hair during windy, rainy, and cold fall days.

Tucking your hair and loose ends away can help protect your hair from further damage in the elements. We recently shared a post with our favorite fall hairstyles and accessories. If you need inspiration for your hair this autumn, read this post next

4. Use a Clarifying Shampoo (Sparingly)

Summer can leave your scalp with a lot of build-up, and a clarifying shampoo can be just the reset you need as you move into fall. Clarifying shampoos are designed to remove product buildup, oils, and impurities, which can be helpful for both your natural hair and the extensions. However, they can also be harsh and potentially dry out your hair and the extensions if used too frequently.

That’s why we only recommend using a clarifying shampoo sparingly (no more than once per month, or once per every two months).

As always, remember that you need to avoid using the product on your bonds themselves, choose sulfate-free shampoos and rinse well.

5. Upgrade Your Pillowcase

Upgrading to a silk pillowcase is one easy way to take better care of your hair this fall. We always recommend that our clients use silk or satin pillowcases. Silk pillowcases help alleviate friction and damage to your hair while you sleep! And they’re also great for your skin.

While fall is one of our favorite seasons in the city, it can be more challenging for your hair. As the leaves change, so does the nature of your hair and its needs. That’s why transitioning from a summer to a fall hair care routine can make all of the difference.

If you’d like to learn more about how you can fall back in love with your hair this autumn, book a consultation with us today to learn more about the extensions that we offer. Extensions aren’t all about length, we also love them for volume and confidence! Because hair really is everything.
