Now, let’s dive into the tools that every hairstylist needs to offer luxury hair extensions to their clients.

Essential Tools for Extension Care: What Every Stylist Needs

Step One: Prep the Hair

You should always start with prepping your clients hair. You want their hair to be clean and free from oils, creams and conditioners. We know how important it is to have the right shampoo, that’s why we designed our own.

Our Cleanse Clarifying Shampoo is professional-grade and formulated with an anti-residue blend that deeply purifies hair without stripping it. It removes buildup and impurities while creating the perfect foundation for long-lasting hair extension adhesion. We use this Clarifying Shampoo before every install and ask our clients to use it on the day of their appointments.

After the hair is clean, make sure that it’s free from knots and tangles. Our Untangle Me Brush is a classic brush that features gentle metal bristles, making detangling your clients hair so much easier. It’s the perfect hair brush to use after a wash.

Now that your client’s hair is properly prepped, let’s move onto some of the tools that you’ll need for the hair extensions installation.

Step Two: Installation

There are a variety of tools that you’ll need for a professional and luxurious installation. At Olivia Christensen Salon, we focus solely on high-quality i-tip hair extensions. This specific type of hair extensions are attached with a small microbead – no heat or chemicals are involved.

A tail comb and sectioning clips are essential for clean, precise parting and effortless installation. Next, keep your loop tool and plenty of beads within reach. These tools ensure a smooth process as you connect your client’s natural hair with the extensions. To finish, use a high-quality pair of extension pliers to securely fasten each bead, creating a flawless and lasting hold.

As you work, gently comb through your client’s hair to keep each section smooth, tangle-free, and perfectly blended from root to tip.

Step Three: Blending

Arguably the most crucial step in any hair extension installation is the haircut. This is when you ensure that the extensions blend seamlessly with your client’s natural hair, creating a flawless and natural finish. For this step, it’s essential to use a high-quality, sharp pair of scissors. Sharp scissors provide clean, precise cuts, while dull scissors can cause fraying and damage to both your client’s hair and the extensions.

Stylist Tip: When cutting extensions, work in small sections and cut into the ends at a slight angle to create movement and a soft, natural look. This helps the extensions blend effortlessly with your client’s layers.

Step Four: Styling

Finally, it’s time to style your client’s hair — the moment when you get to truly showcase their transformation. We love creating big, bouncy blowouts that add both length and volume. When styling, it’s crucial to use the right tools: always start with a heat protectant (this is our favorite), and style using a high-quality blow dryer, straightener, or curling iron.

Keep in mind that oils and creams should never be used with i-tip hair extensions, as they can cause the bonds to slip. Always stick to extension-safe products, and educate your clients to do the same. Using high-quality, silicone-free shampoo and conditioner along with an extension-safe brush will keep their hair healthy, shiny, and perfectly maintained.

Shop our hair extension starter kit here.

Stylist Tip: After blow-drying or curling, gently run an extension-safe brush through the ends to blend the natural hair with the extensions. For extra volume, try lifting sections at the roots and lightly backcombing before smoothing over the top layer — it adds body without disturbing the bonds.

At the end of the day, having the right tools helps you deliver a luxurious experience, but the real game-changer is the quality of your hair extensions. Full-cuticle, 100% human hair is a must—anything less just won’t do.

That’s why we’re excited to introduce Olivia Christensen Extensions – the Birkin of bundles. We’re raising the standard for luxury hair extensions, and now you can be part of it. Join the waitlist today to be among the first stylists to access our launch and offer your clients the ultimate extension experience.

Hair Extension Care

Bye, Bye Dry Hair: Your Fall Hair Care Guide

It’s officially fall here in New York, which means it’s time to switch up your hair care routine. Summer can be tough on your hair — between the sun, chlorine, salt, and sweat, you’re likely heading into fall with drier, more brittle strands. Combine that with the season’s cooler temperatures and lower humidity, and your hair is likely to need a little extra TLC.

This fall hair care guide will walk you through how to keep your hair hydrated and healthy all season long, especially if you wear extensions.

So, how does caring for your extensions differ from caring for your natural hair in the fall? Many seasonal hair guides recommend rich oils and hydrating masks to restore moisture, but those products can cause your extension bonds to slip. That’s why we don’t suggest them.

But don’t worry! We’ve got you covered. This guide is packed with stylist-approved tips to help you care for both your hair and your extensions this fall. Ready? Let’s jump in.

1. Trim Your Hair

Fall is the perfect time for a trim. After a summer of sun, salt, and chlorine, your hair is probably feeling a little dry and brittle. A quick refresh to remove those split or damaged ends will instantly make your hair look and feel healthier. Plus, if you’re worried about losing length, our signature i-tip extensions can restore it seamlessly, leaving you with fuller, healthier-looking hair for the new season.

2. Get Hair Extensions (Yes, Really!)

There’s a common myth (blog post busting myths about hair extensions) that hair extensions damage your natural hair, and while that can happen with the wrong method, our signature i-tip technique does the opposite. It’s lightweight, chemical-free, and designed to protect your natural hair while promoting healthy growth. All of our clients actually notice stronger, longer hair after wearing their extensions.

To find out more about how our signature i-tip method can help protect your hair this fall, book a consultation with our founder, Christina, today.

3. Use a Clarifying Shampoo

Give your hair a fresh start this fall with a clarifying shampoo. After a summer full of sun, salt, and product buildup, your scalp and hair need a deep cleanse. Our Cleanse Clarifying Shampoo is professional-grade and formulated with an anti-residue blend that deeply purifies your hair without stripping it. It removes buildup and impurities while creating the perfect foundation for long-lasting hair extension adhesion.

4. Take Care of Your Scalp

A scalp treatment in the colder months isn’t just a luxury — it’s a must for stronger, healthier, and shinier hair all fall and winter long. The skin on your scalp is delicate and ages up to six times faster than the skin on your face, which means it needs extra care. Ask your stylist about a professional scalp treatment at your next appointment to slow scalp aging and give both your hair and scalp the boost they need to thrive through the colder, drier months.

5. Ask for a Hydrating Treatment (at the salon)

If you’re concerned about keeping your hair (and extensions) properly moisturized, a hydrating treatment at your next salon visit is a must. While we don’t recommend using hair masks at home (they can cause your bonds to slip), your stylist can safely apply them during your extension maintenance appointment. Since these appointments occur every 6–8 weeks, they provide the perfect opportunity to give your hair some extra TLC and keep it looking healthy and vibrant throughout the season.

6. Use the Right Hair Brush

Not all hair brushes are created equally — and some can cause more damage than others. We’ve specifically designed two hair brushes that every woman with hair extensions should be using. Our Untangle Me Brush is a classic brush featuring gentle metal bristles, making detangling your hair a much simpler task. It can also be used in the shower for detangling wet hair, shampooing while massaging the scalp, and distributing conditioner.

Our Loop Brush is a must-have for your fall haircare routine, especially if you have hair extensions. This brush is carefully designed with plastic loop bristles to prevent the snagging that ordinary brushes cause.

7. Use Protective Hairstyles

One of the simplest ways to protect your hair this fall is by opting for protective hairstyles. Limiting heat styling is always key, as heat can cause serious damage over time. Protective styles don’t just shield your strands from heat, they also tuck away your ends, guarding them against cold, wind, and dry seasonal weather.

If you want to try all the products we mentioned in this post, along with our Signature Shampoo and Conditioner, check out our Ultimate Hair Care Kit. It has everything you need to keep your hair and extensions healthy, hydrated, and protected this fall.

How Long Do Hair Extensions Last? A Realistic Guide for First-Timers

How Long Do Hair Extensions Last? A Realistic Guide for First-Timers

If you’re thinking about getting hair extensions for the first time, one of the first questions you probably have is: How long do they actually last? And well, the truth is, it depends.

The lifespan of your hair extensions comes down to a few key factors:

  • The type of hair extensions you choose
  • The quality of the hair
  • How well they’re installed
  • How you care for them day-to-day

At Olivia Christensen Salon, we specialize in luxury i-tip hair extensions made from 100% full-cuticle human hair. Our hair extensions are known for their softness, strength, and longevity.

In this guide, we’re breaking down everything you need to know about how long hair extensions last. So that you can make the best decision for your hair, lifestyle, and long-term goals.

What Impacts the Lifespan of Hair Extensions

When it comes to answering how long hair extensions last, the truth is that it varies. But if you’re investing in high-quality, luxury hair extensions (like the ones we use at Olivia Christensen Salon), you’re already setting yourself up for longer wear and better results.

Here are the biggest factors that affect how long your hair extensions will last:

1. The Extension Method

Not all extension types wear the same. Tape-ins and wefts tend to loosen more quickly, especially in humid or active environments. I-tip extensions, on the other hand, are individually applied with tiny beads and do not require heat, glue, or tape. For you, this means less slipping, more durability, and longer-lasting wear (especially in the summer!).

2. The Hair Quality

This one is huge. Cheap, low-grade hair tangles easily, dries out fast, and simply won’t last. We exclusively use 100% full-cuticle human hair because it blends naturally, holds style, and can be reused for months with proper care.

3. Your Lifestyle

If you swim often, work out daily, or heat-style your hair every morning, your hair extensions may experience more wear and tear. Our i-tips hold up better than most methods, and our clients love how well their extensions stay in place, even with an active schedule and lifestyle.

4. How You Care for Them

Brushing gently, using extension-safe products, and scheduling regular maintenance appointments all play a crucial role in maintaining the health of your hair extensions and prolonging their lifespan. Great hair extensions can last for over a year, but only if you treat them well.

How Long Do I-Tip Extensions Last? (And Why We Use Them)

If you’re wondering how long hair extensions last, i-tip hair extensions are one of the most long-lasting, low-maintenance options available, especially when you invest in premium quality. It’s no wonder that they’re the most popular extensions among celebrities right now, too!

At Olivia Christensen Salon, we exclusively use 100% human hair, full-cuticle, and i-tip extensions from Slavic and Indian sources, as they deliver both durability and luxury. Here’s what you can expect:

  • Each installation lasts 8–12 weeks, depending on your natural hair growth and the care you provide.
  • The hair itself can be reused for up to a year with proper maintenance, making it one of the best long-term investments for your hair goals.
  • I-tips don’t rely on tape, glue, or heat (meaning less wear and tear on both your natural hair and the extension strands over time.)

Unlike more temporary methods, i-tip extensions are designed to move with your hair, not against it. That means fewer issues with tangling, slippage, or matting. Instead, you have soft, seamless extensions that stay secure through workouts, beach days, and everything in between.

This is exactly why we love them (and why our clients do, too).

How Often Will I Need Maintenance Appointments?

When clients ask us how long hair extensions last, what they’re really asking is: How often will I be back at the salon? For this, the answer depends on your hair growth, lifestyle, and how well you’re maintaining your i-tip extensions between appointments.

For most of our clients, we recommend a maintenance appointment every 8 to 12 weeks. This keeps your extensions looking and feeling their best while also protecting the health of your natural hair.

Here’s what to expect during a typical move-up appointment:

  • Beads are safely removed and reapplied closer to the root to accommodate new growth.
  • We check for any signs of tangling or buildup to ensure your natural hair stays healthy underneath.
  • We’ll also take time to refresh your cut, trim the extensions if needed, and recommend any deep-conditioning or glossing treatments for tone and shine.

Skipping maintenance can cause tangling at the root, visible bead placement, and even damage. That is why staying on schedule is also key to extending the life of your luxury i-tip hair extensions.

If you want your extensions to last (and look amazing every step of the way), think of maintenance as a non-negotiable part of your beauty routine. Trust us – it’s worth it.

How to Get the Most Out of Your Extensions

If you’re going to invest in luxury t-tip extensions, you want them to last and look amazing the entire time. With just a little care and consistency, you can absolutely extend the life of your hair extensions and keep your natural hair healthy as well.

Here are our top tips to improve the lifespan of your hair extensions:

  • Brush Gently and Daily: Use a soft-bristle or extension-safe brush to detangle your hair at least once a day. Start from the ends and work your way up to avoid tugging at the beads.
  • Use the Right Products: Sulfate-free shampoo, lightweight conditioners, and leave-ins are your new best friends. Avoid products containing heavy silicones, alcohol, or excessive protein.
  • Sleep Smart: Always go to bed with your hair in a loose braid or low ponytail to prevent tangling while you sleep. A silk pillowcase is even better.
  • Limit Heat Styling: You can curl or straighten your extensions like normal, but try to avoid excessive heat. Let your hair air-dry whenever possible, and always use a heat protectant.
  • Book Regular Maintenance: As we mentioned earlier, staying on top of your move-up appointments is key. It keeps your extensions secure and your natural hair protected, allowing you to get the full 8–12 weeks out of each installation and reuse the hair for months.

Taking care of your extensions doesn’t have to be complicated. A few good habits go a long way in making your investment last.

Invest Once, Love Your Hair for Months

So, how long do hair extensions last? With the right method, the right hair, and a little TLC, your extensions can last far longer than you think. Our clients get months of gorgeous, full, and natural-looking hair with our luxury i-tip extensions made from 100% full-cuticle human hair.

It’s not just about looking good (though that is a part of it); it’s also about feeling confident, carefree, and camera-ready through every season.

Ready to experience it for yourself? Book a consultation at Olivia Christensen Salon, and let’s talk about your hair goals. Whether it’s your first time or your fifth install, we’ll make sure you leave with extensions that look (and feel) like they were made just for you.

The Best Hair Extensions for Your Summer Vacation (Salt, Sweat & Sun-Proof)

Summer vacation is officially here! Whether you’re jetting off to a beachy resort, road-tripping down the coast, or enjoying a summer in Europe, one thing is for sure: your hair has to keep up! Between salty swims, humid air, and nonstop sunshine, this season brings a unique set of hair challenges.

That’s why this summer, all the girls are looking for hair extensions! Not just for length and volume but for an effortless, vacation-ready glam.

The catch? Not all hair extensions are built to survive the summer. The last thing you want is slipping tape, tangled wefts, or high-maintenance styling routines cutting into your vacation.

Great vacation hair should be beautiful and carefree. Today, we’re sharing the best type of hair extensions for summer and why our go-to method holds up through all the salt, sweat, and sun.

The Problem with Traditional Extensions in Summer

Summer is not the time to baby your hair extensions. Between sun exposure, salty swims, and sweaty days on the go, your hair needs to move with you. It’s the time of year when you need your hair to keep up with your lifestyle. Think: low maintenance and high-performing. Unfortunately, not all hair extensions are up for the challenge.

Tape-in extensions are known for their quick installation, but summer doesn’t always play nice with adhesive. The heat, humidity, and moisture from swimming and sweating can cause the tape to loosen or slip. This leaves you constantly adjusting, restyling, or, worst of all… rebooking emergency salon visits mid-vacation.

Clip-ins and halo extensions can be cute for a night out, but they’re not built for longevity. They’re bulky, require daily removal, and won’t survive a day at the beach or a spin class. You’re left skipping the extensions altogether or settling for styles that feel too temporary.

Weft extensions offer fuller coverage, but they can be heavy and hard to style. They can end up trapping moisture after a day at the beach or a dip in the pool, which can cause your head to itch uncomfortably. During the summer, weft hair extensions can cause irritation, buildup, and even damage if not correctly cared for. They’re not exactly the effortless summer hair you were going for…

These traditional hair extension methods come with trade-offs, and summer can often magnify that struggle.

But there’s one method that holds up through it all, and we swear by it for a reason…

Why I-Tip Extensions Are the Ultimate Vacation Hair Solution

If you’re searching for hair extensions that keep up with all your summer plans… i-tip extensions are the answer! At Olivia Christensen Salon, we specialize in luxury i-tip hair extensions that are made from 100% full-cuticle human hair. That’s not just a fancy detail… that’s what makes them style like your own hair, move naturally, and last through whatever your summer throws at you.

Here’s why we love i-tips for summer:

  • No tape, glue, or heat is required. That means nothing sticky to weaken in the heat or come loose after a dip in the ocean.
  • They stay put. I-tip extensions are attached with tiny, lightweight beads that won’t budge—whether you’re sweating through a hike or jumping into salt water.
  • They dry easily and style beautifully. Because they’re made with real, full-cuticle hair, they respond just like your natural hair. Curl them, wave them, slick them back. The options are endless.
  • They’re discreet. Want to throw your hair up in a claw clip or a sleek ponytail? Go for it. I-tips blend seamlessly and stay hidden, even when styled up.

Our clients tell us time and time again: these are the extensions that let you truly enjoy your vacation without having to worry about your hair. They’re low-maintenance and perfect for jet-setting girls who never compromise on style.

How to Care for Your Extensions While Traveling

And honestly, one of the best things about i-tip hair extensions is that they’re travel-friendly! But, just like your hair, a little care goes a long way, especially when you’re hopping between airports, pools, and humid destinations.

Here are our top tips for keeping your extensions looking flawless while you’re away:

  1. Use a silk pillowcase.

It’s a game-changer. Sleeping on silk reduces friction, helping prevent tangling, frizz, and breakage—so you wake up with smoother, softer hair.

  1. Brush gently and often.

Don’t forget your hair extensions detangling brush; gently detangle your hair in the morning and at night to keep it healthy. Start at the ends and work your way up to avoid tugging at the beads.

  1. Bring along the right shampoo and conditioner.

Opt for sulfate-free, extension-safe formulas that cleanse gently without stripping your hair. We always recommend that you pour your favorites into travel-sized bottles for your trip. Our top recommendations for summer are this shampoo (once or twice a week) and this shampoo and conditioner!

  1. Ask for a hair treatment at your next maintenance appointment.

Before your vacation, schedule a hydrating treatment to keep your hair soft, healthy, and prepped for sun exposure. It’s a simple step that makes a big difference.

With just a little care, your i-tip extensions will stay looking fresh, full, and fabulous—no matter where your summer takes you.

Ready for Your Best Summer Hair Yet?

When it comes to looking effortlessly chic on vacation, your hair should be the least of your worries. With i-tip extensions, you get the freedom to swim, sweat, and style without compromise. It’s no wonder all the it-girls are making the switch this summer.

Whether you’re jet-setting to Europe, heading to the beach, or just enjoying the sunshine at home, luxury i-tip extensions are the ultimate summer hair solution.

Book your appointment at Olivia Christensen Salon today and get vacation-ready with extensions that can truly keep up. Let’s talk about your hair goals and find your perfect match.

Hair Extension Care

What to Expect After Getting Hair Extensions

How you take care of your hair extensions will help ensure that they last much longer. At our salons, we only use the highest quality, full-cuticle human hair for our extensions – which means with the proper application and care, they should last for years.

By attending regular maintenance appointments and following our aftercare routine, you can keep your new hair looking amazing for longer than any other style of hair extensions! Of course, to talk about hair extension aftercare, we also want to talk to you about installation.

Proper Hair Extension Installation

We can’t stress enough how important proper installation is. That’s one of the reasons why we have clients who travel from all across the US for maintenance appointments. Hair extensions that are fitted and maintained properly will last years longer.

Hair extensions should be treated like an investment. Something you’re going to use daily for the next 1-2 years.

When coming to your first appointment, it’s important to make sure your hair is clean but free of products. You don’t want any residue in your hair during application.

Don’t worry though! When you come in for your consultation appointment we go over all of this information with you – and we’ll answer any questions that you may have.

Today, we mainly want to focus on what you can expect after getting your hair extensions for the first time!

What to Expect After Getting Hair Extensions

Weight & Tenderness

You might have heard stories from friends or coworkers about scalp tenderness and an overall ‘heavy’ feeling after your first appointment. And that usually comes down to what kind of hair extensions they’re getting.

We’ve talked before about the various types of extensions, but at our salons, we specialize in microbead i-tip extensions.

If you’ve never had extensions before, after your first appointment you will notice that your hair feels a bit heavier – you will have a lot more hair after all! However, because we take small bundles of hair and attach them to your natural hair, the weight is distributed evenly across your scalp.

Our clients who have come to us after having a weft have said that the first thing they’ve noticed is that their head suddenly feels so much lighter. Wefts tend to feel heavy and it can take you a while to get used to that. They can also cause your scalp to feel tender, because of the way the bulk of the hair is sitting in one row of your natural hair.

Aftercare

We send each of our clients home with special aftercare instructions and product recommendations to help prolong the life of their extensions. One of the first things that we ask is that you wait 2-3 days after an appointment, before washing your hair.

It’s also important to avoid using hair conditioners, oils, or masks around the bonds. This can cause your hair extensions to slip.

You want to keep your hair clean with high-quality products. We always recommend Oribe (this shampoo and conditioner are especially good). Along with high-quality hair care products, having the right brush makes a difference.

This brush is specifically designed to keep your hair extension bonds completely tangle-free! And this is the ultimate detangling brush that you need whether or not you have hair extensions.

Because you’ve invested in hair extensions, you’re also going to want to invest in high-quality products to care for them. While we only use the highest quality hair extensions, they’re still not going to get the nutrients that your scalp is giving to your natural hair.

So while you can style and treat them like your natural hair, they’re more susceptible to damage – which is why aftercare is so important!

The Best Products for Hair Extensions

Maintenance appointments

You can also expect to book in for regular maintenance appointments. Our clients come in every 6-8 weeks and during the appointment, we remove the extensions, come out the hair fall, and then reapply the extensions. While that might sound like a lot – regular maintenance appointments should only take around an hour.

You shouldn’t wear your extensions for longer than 2 months continuously, simply because of hair fall, tangling, and slippage. During this time, your hair will have grown over an inch! That extra space can cause your hair extensions to pull on your natural hair and it leaves room for your roots to get tangled.

Regular maintenance appointments avoid all of this.

With proper installation, you should leave your first hair extension appointment with luscious new locks and relatively no pain or scalp tenderness. And with regular maintenance and proper aftercare, your new extensions should last for years to come!

10 Things You Didn’t Know About Hair Extensions

Extensions are a fast way to add length, volume, and style to your hair, but more importantly, they’re one of the fastest ways to boost your confidence.

Over the years, we’ve seen hair extensions change women’s lives from regaining their confidence after cancer treatments to falling back in love with themselves just by looking in the mirror. We’ve helped thousands of women on their hair extension journey.

Still, hair extensions aren’t something you should rush into. It’s important to know the different types of extensions and the upkeep and maintenance they require.

Today we’re going to share 10 things you probably didn’t know about hair extensions.

10 Things You Didn’t Know About Hair Extensions

#1: There are many different types of hair extensions

(and they’re not all created equally)

When most women embark on their hair extension journey, they’re not really sure what style or type of hair extensions to go with. In reality, a lot of women don’t realize just how many choices they have!

In this post, we do a deep dive into the various hair extension techniques and the pros and cons of each style.

These are the most typical or popular hair extension installation methods:

  • Clip-In
  • Halo
  • Tape-In
  • Sew-In (Weft/Weave)
  • Keratin Fusion (K-Tips)
  • Microbead Extensions (I-Tips)

We love I-Tips because they’re the safest and most natural-looking extension. This is because you’re taking smaller portions of extension hair and attaching it to your natural hair. This causes a lot less hair loss and matting and it alleviates that feeling of hair extensions being ‘heavy.’

#2: You get what you pay for

Not all hair extensions are created equally. That’s just the honest truth of the hair extension industry. There’s simply not enough hair for the demand, which means you can end up with synthetic hair extensions or hair that has been wrongly stolen from women around the world.

This is why it’s so important to go with a salon that’s sourcing quality, real-human hair from distributors that are compensating women fairly. At Olivia Christensen Salon we source all of our hair from Eastern Europe and India and it’s always high-quality full cuticle hair.

This also means with proper care and maintenance, your hair extensions should last for years to come!

#3: Extensions require a bit of extra care and attention

Each of our clients leaves the salon with detailed instructions on how to care for their extensions. Luckily, because we use full-cuticle human hair, installed using i-tips, you can style and wear your hair like normal. You can also exercise as normal, but you will need to take extra care when washing and maintaining your extensions.

Our clients come in every 6-8 weeks for maintenance appointments and there might be certain products you can’t use anymore.

#4: Good hair extensions should look like your natural hair

Another place you’re going to see the difference in the quality of hair extensions is in how they look when you’re wearing them. In other words, quality hair extensions should never look like hair extensions. They should genuinely look like an extension of your natural hair.

We love that each client who walks out of our salon looks like she has fuller and longer natural hair. Even with transformations like this one.

#5: Hair extensions aren’t just for length

One of the common misconceptions about hair extensions is that they’re just for women who want longer hair. When in fact, a lot of the women who come to see us want volume just as much (if not more) as they want length.

Hair extensions help your hair look healthier and fuller, so if you’ve always struggled with volume, reach out to see how we can help!

#6: Hair extensions are faster to install than you think

At this point, you’re probably loving the idea of getting hair extensions yourself, but the time commitment feels overwhelming. That’s because it’s a common misconception that hair extensions take a lot of time.

Our first-time installation can be done in an hour-long appointment. And your routine maintenance can be done in an hour, every 6-8 weeks. It doesn’t have to be a huge commitment to have full beautiful hair, you just need to make sure you’re choosing the right salon.

#7: Hair extensions should be comfortable

A lot of our clients who switch from weft or weaves to i-tips comment on how much lighter their extensions feel. Here’s the thing… hair extensions shouldn’t be heavy. They shouldn’t leave you with a headache at the end of the day. That’s a sign that they haven’t been installed properly or that it’s not the right hair extension technique for you.

If you’ve never had comfortable hair extensions, get in touch with our team. We’ll be able to show you a whole new world of extensions.

#8: Good hair extensions won’t damage your natural hair

One of the first questions women ask me when they enter the salon is this, “Will hair extensions damage my natural hair?” The truth is, that hair extensions should promote your natural hair to grow and be as healthy as possible. When installed properly, hair extensions actually protect your natural hair and help improve its appearance.

However, if you get poor-quality hair extensions or you have them installed by someone who doesn’t know what they’re doing… that’s a surefire way to ruin your natural hair.

#9: Hair extensions can be good for your hair

We already touched on this one slightly, but hair extensions can be really good for your natural hair. We’ve seen women post-cancer treatment come in for extensions and over time see their own hair grow back beautifully alongside the extensions.

When you have extensions, you’re likely going to be caring for your hair so much more than normal. You’ll be attending regular maintenance appointments, you’ll be using products that are better for your hair and you’ll be more conscious of decisions that affect your hair – all leading to stronger, healthier natural hair.

#10: Hair extensions require different haircare products

Lastly, when you have hair extensions, you’re going to need to use a few different products – and there are going to be products that you need to avoid. Going forward, you won’t be able to use hair oils and you’ll need to be careful with things like hair masks because they can cause your extensions to slip.

Your best bet is to always go over a haircare routine with your stylist before leaving the salon. And make sure to pick up any products that they recommend! Hair Extension Care

The Importance of Hair Extension Maintenance

Let’s talk about the importance of hair extension maintenance. Quality hair extensions aren’t cheap but when they’re properly cared for, they should last for years.

We recently talked about the importance of quality hair extensions and why it’s so important to know where your extensions are coming from. But we also shared that our extensions typically start at $1,500 and can go up to $6,500.

We recognize that your hair is a big investment and that’s why we send all of our clients home with detailed (and pretty strict!) care instructions and follow-up, maintenance appointments. So let’s dive into why maintenance appointments are so important – and what you can do at home to better protect and care for your extensions.

The Importance of Hair Extension Maintenance

Did you know that you shed around 45-98 hairs each day? YUP. When you feel like you’re constantly ‘shedding’, it’s because you usually are.

However, when you have extensions, that shedded hair gets trapped in the small beads/links that are applied to hold the extension strand. That’s why it’s so important to come in for regular hair extension maintenance appointments.

We have our clients come in every 4-8 weeks depending on how well they maintain their extensions at home.

When you come in for your hair extension maintenance appointment, we comb through the ‘shedded’ hair. It may feel like a lot of hair fall – but remember that all of this shedded hair is from 4-8 weeks.

Once we’ve combed through the shedded hair, we then apply a new bead or link and retip the bonds to ensure that they are encapsulated and secure. This process helps keep your hair extensions intact so that they can be reused. But it also means that each time you come in for your hair extension maintenance appointments, we have to essentially start from scratch.

We do this to maintain the quality of your hair – so that you can continue to use these extensions for years to come!

How to Care for Your Hair Extensions at Home

Besides your regular maintenance appointments, we also send our clients home with strict care instructions.

At Olivia Christensen Salon we use only real, quality human hair extensions, which means that you can style them as you would your normal hair. However, you need to take better care of your extensions and your hair overall when you have extensions.

Here are some of our top tips for maintaining your quality hair extensions so you can wear them for years to come.

Attend Regular Hair Extension Maintenance Appointments

As we said above, one of the most important things that you can do to maintain your hair extensions is to come to regular maintenance appointments. Our clients come in every 4-8 weeks for hair extension maintenance. We schedule these appointments to comb out the shedded hair but also to protect the bead/link of each extension.

If you leave your hair extensions in too long with these maintenance appointments, the beads can bend and distort. This can lead to the extensions getting ruined and in some cases, natural hair loss as well.

Have Your Hair Extensions Installed Properly

Similar to the sentiment that not all hair extensions are created equal or of the same quality – how you have your extensions installed is just as important.

At Olivia Christensen Salon we’ve developed a special installation technique that blends your extensions to naturally match your hair. This technique also ensures that your extensions are being installed correctly every time.

Wash Your Extensions Carefully

Oftentimes people feel like they can’t wash their hair when they have extensions in – but that’s far from the truth. In fact, it’s important to wash your hair like normal – but you need to wash your hair less frequently and with greater care.

We recommend brushing your hair carefully before washing, being extremely gentle with your scalp, and avoiding harsh chemicals in your products.

Sleep on Silk or Satin

Whether or not you have extensions, we recommend that you switch to a silk or satin pillowcase. Silk pillowcases prevent dryness and hair loss. We also recommend against sleeping with your hair in a bun, or ponytail or leaving it flowing freely. Instead, put your hair in two loose braids and wrap a silk scarf around your head.

Avoid Using Too Many Products

When it comes to the number of products you use on your hair – more does not equal better. We recommend using fewer products on your hair and instead focusing on the quality of those products and how you use them. Things like dry shampoos should be used sparingly (because they tend to dry your hair out) and we don’t recommend using a heat protectant as most of them contain harmful ingredients that may cause the extensions to slip out.

Brush Your Hair Often

Lastly, make sure that you are brushing your hair often. There’s nothing worse than tangles and knots in your hair extensions. So one of the best (and easiest) ways to maintain your hair extensions is simply through brushing them. Brush your hair when you wake up, when you style your hair for the day, before you shampoo, and before bed every night.

Different types of hair brushes work well for different hair types, so make sure to ask your stylist what they recommend for you.

With proper care, your high-quality hair extensions should last you for months. It’s so important to make sure that you are attending your hair extension maintenance appointments and following strict hair extension care instructions to maintain your beautiful new hair.
